455 Webley
The .455 Webley (.455 Revolver Mark II) was developed in 1897 and adopted by the British Army in the same year. It has a shorter (.7677-inch) case than the previous .455 Mark I to more efficiently burn Cordite powder. Obviously associated with several generations of the Webley top-break double-action revolver, the .455 Mark II remained in service until after WWII, when it was replaced by the 9mm as part of NATO standardization. The original load was a heavy 265-grain round-nose bullet at a mild 600 fps. Although never popular in the United States, the .455 Mark II is a classic military revolver cartridge that provided good service in countless conflicts small and large. — Craig Boddington
