6.5mmX57R
6.5mmX57R is the rimmed version of the 6.5X57mm Mauser intended to provide better extraction in single-shots and double rifles. In the 1890s Mauser necked their successful 57mm case (7X57, 8X57) to virtually all suitable bullet diameters. The 6.5X57 was an 1895 experimental military cartridge that was never adopted, but in both rimless and rimmed versions it became a fairly popular sporting cartridge in Europe. Both versions are still loaded in Europe and the 6.5X57R is still seen in European single-shot rifles. With a 126.5-grain bullet at 2740 fps the 6.5X57R is an excellent medium-range deer cartridge. — Craig Boddington
