24 Gauge
Although rarely seen in the United States the 24-gauge was a standard shotgun gauge and shotshell in Europe and remains available today. In performance the 24 gauge falls exactly in between the 20 and 28-gauge, so is effective for both clay target shooting and hunting upland birds. Bore diameter is .585-inch, with a 2.5-inch case and standard shot charge of 11/16-ounce. Fiocchi remains a major European supplier of 24-gauge shotshells. Combining mild recoil with potentially extremely light gun weight the 24-gauge is often encountered in high-quality European double-barrel shotguns. — Craig Boddington
