Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
Designed by Winchester and introduced by Winchester and Smith & Wesson in 1990, the 40 S&W was designed as a "compromise" semiautomatic pistol cartridge that would offer more performance than the 9mm Luger (9x19)…but would produce less recoil and allow higher magazine capacity than the 45 ACP. Few compromises in the firearms world have ever worked as well. From a manufacturing standpoint many pistols designed for the 9mm could be re-engineered to handle the larger cartridge; in a short time it has become a standard issue in the law enforcement community. Using a .400-inch bullet of from 135 to 180 grains from a .850-inch cae, the .40 S&W produces up to 1205 fps, and although recoil is greater than the 9mm, it is easier to shoot than the 45 ACP, and its greater velocity and smaller bullet diameter aid penetration. — Craig Boddington

When I was researching this pistol before I made my purchase, everyone had one word to describe it, QUALITY! Well, I can assure you, they were not wrong. I picked this pistol up at my FFL, brought it home and cleaned it up. It looks brand new, it's tight and has almost no wear on the barrel. I guess the officer that carried this just kept it it their holster. I am thoroughly shocked at the deal I got and could not be happier. I changed the grips up for the new E2 series grips and put a .357 Sig barrel in the pistol. What a dream! The trigger is super smooth as well and blows any Glock I have held out of the water (no offense Glock, I still like you too). The ergonomics feel like they were custom fit for my hands. It is a little thick, but not as bad as I have heard and it pretty much points perfectly. The sights are also something to behold, plain three dot metal sights. As I inspected the pistol and took it apart, the receiver is immaculate. I have zero issues with it so far. Let's hope it shoots well, I have no doubt it will perform well.
