At the end of the Civil War (1865), the US War department had to replace the muzzle loading muskets in its arsenal with metallic cartridge rifles. Between 1865 and 1866 several designs to modify the muzzle loading musket rifles into cartridge rifles were presented and by 1868 the “Trapdoor” system was chosen and production started. In 1873 a new model came out in the famous .45-70 government caliber and remained in use by the army until 1899. All Pedersoli Trapdoors are equipped with PPMG (Pedersoli Premium Match Grade) barrels.
