Product Summary

Kel-Tec RDB 223 Remington/5.56mm NATO 17" Barrel Bullpup Style Black Finish 20 Round Mag Semi Automatic

RDB Bullpup
Downward-ejecting bullpup. Features a rotary bolt with a spring loaded ejector and an extractor facing down. Spent case is pulled backwards along the top of the magazine and then ejected through a vertical chute. Hammer is U-shaped and runs outside the chute and above the magazine. Bolt travel is longer than traditional designs but well within the ergonomic constraints of a rifle. Picatinny rail allows the use of any aftermarket optical, electronic or flip-up sighting system. Backbone of the rifle is formed by the barrel and its extension which runs rearward to serve as bolt group guide and structural support for external housing which is made of plastic. Uses STANAG (M16 / AR15 compatible) magazines and magazine release lever is centrally located in front of the magazine housing. To release the magazine, one has to push this lever backwards and this can be done by either non-firing hand or by the back of the firing hand depending on situation and user preferences.

Through an ingenious and simple arrangement we have solved the main disadvantage of Bullpup rifles; case ejection. Traditional side ejection is not ambidextrous and forward eject, like in the FN 2000 or the Kel-Tec RFB, is quite complex.

The RDB (Rifle Downward-eject Bullpup) features a rotary bolt with a spring loaded ejector and an extractor facing down. The spent case is pulled backwards along the top of the magazine and then ejected through a vertical chute. The hammer is U-shaped and runs outside the chute and above the magazine. Obviously, the bolt travel is longer than traditional designs but well within the ergonomic constraints of a rifle. Other advantages are gravity assisted ejection, higher bolt energy at feeding and a slower full auto rate (when applicable).

The RDB is built around a common steel skeleton formed by the receiver and barrel sub-assemblies. Bolt, bolt carrier, firing mechanism, ejector chute and bolt stop are identical for all variations. The short stroke gas operated piston is fully adjustable for different ammunitions and muzzle attachments

Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
The 5.56X45mm NATO cartridge was designed by James Sullivan, a member of Eugene Stoner's engineering team that developed both the M16 rifle and its original cartridge. The 5.56X45mm NATO was adopted by the U.S. military in 1964 and by NATO in 1980. With bullet diameter of .224-inch, the original M193 military cartridge used a 55-grain bullet at 3250 fps; the current M855A1 cartridge, developed by FN, uses a 62.5-grain bullet at 3020 fps, offering greater range and better penetration. The civilian version of the 5.56X45mm is 223 Remington; the cartridges are dimensionally identical but military chamber dimensions and specifications for military brass are different. It is considered safe to use 223 Remington ammo in a 5.56X45MM NATO chamber, but not a good idea to use 5.56X45mm ammo in a rifle specifically chambered for the 223 Remington. Although the stopping power of .22-caliber bullets remains controversial the 5.56X45mm has served well in now multiple generations of M16 rifles. — Craig Boddington
