Winchester’s 1873 rifle was the “Rifle that Won the West.” It was chambered in a new, more powerful cartridge, the .44-40—a .44 caliber bullet, propelled by 40 grains of black powder. However, a factor that really insured the success of the 1873 Winchester rifles was that Colt quickly offered its Peacemaker chambered in .44-40, as well. A cowboy could have both a lever-action rifle and his six shooter, and needed only one cartridge belt for both. Most Texas Rangers and every old West cowboy worth his salt carried 1873 rifles. Chappo, the son of Apache war chief Geronimo, packed an 1873. And Buffalo Bill carried an 1873 lever-action rifle along with a pair of .44-40 Colts in 1876 when he worked as an Army scout.

Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
The 38-40 Winchester (38-40 WCF) was introduced in 1874 in the Winchester Model 1873. It is based on the 44-40 necked down to a .401-inch diameter bullet, originally loaded with a 180-grain bullet in front of 40 grains blackpowder. Although never as popular as the 44-40, the 38-40 was chambered in a variety of lever-action and single-shot rifles. From 1878 the 38-40 was chambered by Colt in the Single Action Army and, later, Colt's Lightning slide action rifle and double-action revolvers. Current ballistics are about the same as the original blackpowder load, a 180-grain bullet at 1160 feet per second. Yielding just 538 foot-pounds, the 38-40 is extremely marginal for deer...but it was surely used by many settlers to fill the pot, as well as for personal defense. No new firearms have been chambered to 38-40 since 1937, but many rifles and revolvers so chambered are still in use. — Craig Boddington

A bit of confusion during the purchase process, in retrospect, I'm chalking it up to this covid crap. The sales personal were great in sorting things out and getting the whole process headed in the right direction. The rifle...... I have a number of Uberti's and this one isn't any different, excellent fit and finish, it appears that Uberti or at the request of Cimarron, the stain used to finish the stock is a light shade of red, very attactive. Bluing, excellent. A bit stiff out of the box but after a bit of cleaning and lubrication and twenty rounds, it started to slick up. It's going deer hunting next season and should be a good one.

Great rifle. Uberti/Cimarron quality is outstanding. This is second 1873 purchased from Wholesale Hunter. Now have 44-40 and 38-40. Appreciate the authenticity and the discreet location of the proof stamps which do not clutter up the barrel ! The purchase process is very easy and response to question by phone were very professional. Thanks for your fine customer service and quality products.
