I have used American Pioneer Powder(APP)FFg for almost two years. I use the powder in St. Louis hawkins 50 caliber rifle. I find that the APP (FFg) powder is very coarse and takes a good spark to ignite it. Before I load the powder into the barrel, I spike it with a little finely grounded up APP powder. I use a wooden handle and a plastic cup to finely grind the coarse powder into a fine flowery powder. No more hang fires.
The APP powder does cause some fouling at the muzzle end of the barrel. To work around this problem, I use a .49" ball and a .005 patch. Another way is to clean out the barrel with a damp(water) cleaning patch. Before shooting; fire a few primers to clear the barrel.
Cleaning takes about 15 minutes, with only water and some cleaning patches. I usually run a wire brush down the barrel to help the cleaning process. Good stuff! Try it. You will never go back to the other substitute stuff or black powder.
