Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
Introduced by Ruger in 2004, the 204 Ruger is the first cartridge to bear the Ruger name. Based on the near-obsolete 222 Remington Magnum case necked down, the 204 Ruger uses a light .20-caliber (.204-inch) bullet to achieve dramatic velocity. Although there are numerous wildcats, it is the only standard 20-caliber cartridges. With 32 and 34-grain bullets it's among the handful of cartridges that exceed 4000 feet per second; with heavier bullets from 35 to 45 grains it's still very fast. Accuracy is usually excellent and the .20-caliber bullets tend to hold up better in the wind than 17s. It is thus suitable for varmint shooting at longer ranges, and is plenty powerful enough for game up to coyotes in size. The 204 Ruger rapidly achieved a significant following, with both ammuniton and rifles available from multiple manufacturers. It is not as popular as the 223 Remington or 22-250...but probably runs a close third in varmint hunting circles. — Craig Boddington

Just got a chance to shoot this gun today for the first time. Wow what a great bench varmint rifle. This is the first No. I that I have owned but I like it it a lot. First time at the range the groups ranged from 5 shot clover leaf to about 1/2" the 32gr Hornaday shot the best the 40 grains the least good. I love the way the rifle loads and ejects, very clever and flawless. The walnut stock is good quality but plain straigh grained which is fine for me. The fit and finish was excellent. I do a lot of Prarrie dog shooting from a bench so really a single shot is the way to go. I never load the magazines on on varmint bolt action guns on the bench anyway. This will be much easier to use on the bench then a bolt action, easier to clean too. Oh let me also say this cool fact about this gun, with 32 grain bullets the recoil is so light in this 26" heavy barrel rifle that your scope will not bounce off target so you can watch the impact and make corrections. My CZ 527 varminter in 204 will bounce of target and so does my heavy Savage Varminter in 22-250. So looking forward to my next Prarrie dog trip.

This has got to be the ultimate Prairie dog bench rifle. Easily shoots under 1/2" MOA with factory Hornady V-Max ammunition. The long 26" barrel provides enough extra weight so that your scope won't bounce of target and you can see the bullet impact which helps when making long shots where you may need to make adjustments for distance or wind. I love the single shot function of this gun because shooting from the bench , I just keep my ammo on the bench next to me and while keeping an eye through the scope, just keep feeding the rifle. Also on those long day shots where I may fire 300 to 500 rounds in a day and have to clean the bore several times, this rifle is much easier to clean than a bolt action since you don'r have to remove the bolt. There is a good reason the Ruger No 1 is one of Craig Boddingtons favorite rifles.
