Mossberg has designed the 835 around the demands of the heavy 3 1/2" loads, unlike the competition who simply modified their existing 2 3/4" and 3" guns. The bolt, receiver and barrel are specifically sized for longer shells and heavier loads. All barrels are over-bored to 10 gauge dimensions to allow for a long gradual choke effect, which reduces felt recoil and creates a superior pattern. This unique feature dramatically reduces shot deformation and the over-constriction commonly found in other 3 1/2 " models. In addition to the performance enhancing over-bored barrels, strategic placement of 8 ports on each side of the barrel direct gasses upward and away from the shooter to reduce recoil and to minimize muzzle jump.
