Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
There are two versions of the 450/400 Nitro Express: 450-400 3 1/4", based on a blackpowder case; and 450-400-3" (400 Jeffery), designed for smokeless powder and introduced by W.J. Jeffery in 1902. Although performance is very similar they are not interchangeable, as the 450-400-3" has a thicker rim. The 450-400 3 1/4" is slightly more powerful, but the 450-400-3" is more common today and offers better load density with modern propellents. Collectively they were extremely popular a century ago, probably the most popular cartridge among tiger hunters and considered adequate for the world's largest game. On Craig Boddington's recommendation Hornady added the 450-400-3" to their dangerous game line; it has been popular in the Ruger Number One single shot and is currently chambered by most modern double rifle makers. With a 400-grain bullet at 2100 fps it develops much less recoil than big-bore cartridges, yet is perfect for buffalo and adequate for elephant. Kynoch loads both versions. — Craig Boddington

So far 5 Cape buffalo have been taken down with my double Sabatti Big Five rifle using Hornady 450/400 DGX ammunition. 100% perfect performance every time. I'm still using the the non bonded version which work great. I guess due to customer demand they are coming out with bonded bullets, but the standard bullets have always worked great for me. The word out on the street is that Hornady is not making a ig deal out of the change and they are keeping the same part numbers but new boxes that say bonded on them. Some of the other big bore calibers I have like my 375 H&H and my 450 NE. I have used both the non bonded and now some of the new bonded bullets. They are exactly the same weight and profile and the point of impact is exactly the same. I would not hesitate to use either one again. For the price they can't be beat.
