Product Summary

Despite its small size, the P224 maintains a double-stack magazine for a capacity of 12 9mm rounds and 10 rounds of .40S&W, giving the P224 a decided advantage over most subcompact competitors. Featuring a lightweight alloy frame, the P224 is available in a number of configurations, including 9mm or 40S&W with traditional DA/SA action with a short-reset trigger (SRT) or 40S&W Double-Action Kellerman (DAK) trigger. The Sig Anti-Snag (SAS) model features a de-horned slide and frame, and the ergonomically enhanced one-piece grip. Full-size Siglite Night Sights allow the P224 to deliver pinpoint accuracy, a challenge in many subcompacts. The P224 Subcompact is an ideal concealed carry or back-up gun, an especially good choice for those familiar with the Sig Sauer manual of arms because, from the full-sized P226 to the P229 to the P224, the controls and operation all remain the same. The P224 accepts newer P229 magazines, allowing users to carry a full-size spare magazine as a backup to the flush-fit P224 magazine. Law enforcement officers will appreciate not having to carry separate magazines solely for their backup guns.

Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
Designed by Winchester and introduced by Winchester and Smith & Wesson in 1990, the 40 S&W was designed as a "compromise" semiautomatic pistol cartridge that would offer more performance than the 9mm Luger (9x19)…but would produce less recoil and allow higher magazine capacity than the 45 ACP. Few compromises in the firearms world have ever worked as well. From a manufacturing standpoint many pistols designed for the 9mm could be re-engineered to handle the larger cartridge; in a short time it has become a standard issue in the law enforcement community. Using a .400-inch bullet of from 135 to 180 grains from a .850-inch cae, the .40 S&W produces up to 1205 fps, and although recoil is greater than the 9mm, it is easier to shoot than the 45 ACP, and its greater velocity and smaller bullet diameter aid penetration. — Craig Boddington
