Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
The 30-30 Winchester (30 Winchester Center Fire or WCF) was introduced in Winchester's John Browning-designed Model 1894. The rifle was intended for smokeless powder…but the first smokeless powder sporting cartridges, the 30-30 and 25-35, weren't ready for release until 1895. Its "30-30" designation meant ".30-caliber, 30 grains of powder." This is a carryover from blackpowder designations, but 30 grains of smokeless powder gave the 30-30 unprecedented velocity for its day. The 30-30 quickly became America's gold-standard deer cartridge--and despite the many faster cartridges now available, it remains a very effective deer cartridge out to perhaps 150 yards. It has been chambered in single-shots and bolt-actions, but its traditional home is the tubular-magazine lever-action...which requires very blunt-nosed bullets, the lone exception being Hornady's FTX with a compressible polymer tip. All major manufacturers offer 30-30 ammuntion, and rifles are available from multiple sources. — Craig Boddington

I pulled my 1970s Marlin Model 336 out of mothballs for deer season this year. I live in insanely anti-gun California and their new, aggressive way of attacking the Second Amendment is to grossly over-regulate ammunition. What's the hammer without the nails, right? Since all hunters are forced to use lead-free ammunition, it was difficult to find something compatible with a 30-30 lever-action rifle. I've used Barnes Vor-TX 150 gr. and Federal Premium 150 gr. with the Barnes Triple Shock bullet. They both performed well but were somewhat difficult to load in the tube magazine because they both have hollow point bullets and they were grabby. I worried that loading and unloading would take a toll on the bullet nose. I discovered Hornady 30-30 Win 140 gr. MONOFLEX and decided to give them a try. I found loading smoother with the "spire" point bullet protected by the flex tip and neither loading or unloading seemed to negatively affect the bullet. I only had to make a minor scope adjustment at the range, probably because of the fact that the 140 gr. bullet is lighter and faster than the other two. The group of three was very tight, at 100 yards, with tow shots touching and one within a quarter an inch. I couldn't be happier. I highly recommend this ammunition to anyone using a lever action.
