45-75 Winchester
Introduced by Winchester in 1876 the .45-75 Winchester was a landmark development. Introduced in the 1876 "Centennial" Winchester lever action, it offered power very similar to the .45-70 Government...but in a repeating rifle. Using a bottleneck case with case length 1.882-inch, the .45-75 propelled a 350-grain bullet of .454-inch diameter) at 1380 fps. Realistically, it was only slightly more powerful than the .45-60...and only slightly less powerful than the .45-70, but its case "maxed out" the 1876 action, and it made a huge splash when introduced at the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition. It was adopted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and retained past the end of the century but, realistically, both the 1876 Winchester and the .45-75 were eclipsed by the smoother Model 1886 Winchester, which could handle the .45-70 (and still larger cartridges). The .45-75 Winchester made the transition to smokeless powder and production continued into the 1930s — Craig Boddington
