Based on the non-belted, rebated-rim 404 Jeffrey case, the 7mm RUM is without a doubt the highest performing .284 caliber cartridge commercially loaded today. As with any of the “super magnum” sized cartridges that are necked down to smaller calibers, slow powders will work best. Periodic case neck annealing may be necessary to ensure a good seal in the chamber. Signs of a poor seal include excessive blackening beyond the neck and/or case collapsing. IMR 7828 is an excellent powder choice for this cartridge, yielding the most consistent results across all bullet weights.
