Product Summary

African Dangerous Game Side by Side safari double rifle in .450/400 3" Nitro Express AKA .400 Jeffery. With double triggers and Extractor. Designed and manufactured to assure performance, strength, reliability & accuracy. The receiver is forged & milled from a solid block of high strength steel.

Craig Boddington shot his 100th Buffalo wit this exact same model and calber gun in Mozambique October 2017.

The .450/400 3" Nitro Express AKA 400 Jeffery was once a favored caliber before the .375 H&H. This will fire a 400 grain bullet over 2100 FPS making it an excellent Cape Buffalo rifle. The high sectional density of the 400 grain solid at 2100 FPS will penetrate deeper than 458 Win Mag with a 500 grain solid making this an effective elephant rifle with manageable recoil. It is better to shoot a 400 grain bullet accurately and quickly that a 500 grain bullet poorly. Consider a 450/400 as you Dangerous Game rifle.

According to John Taylor he wrote about the 450/400 3"..."I have used it extensively on all kinds of African game from Elephant on down with the greatest possible satisfaction." "I have never heard any African hunter complain about the .400." "For some reason that I find difficult to explain, I derived greater pleasure from using the .400 than any other caliber; and no weapon behaved more successfully in my hands."

We carry Hormady Ammunition. Brass, Bullets and reloadimg dies for the 450/400 3" Nitro Express.

The 24" barrels are made from 4140 chrome molybdenum steel and are cold hammer forged for better accuracy and tight tolerances. Finish is a high luster blued.

Sabatti rifles are built with the latest CNC machinery for tight tolerance, precision fit and lower cost of production blended with Old world craftsmanship to have the best of both worlds.

The rifle weighs 9.9 pounds.

The selected grade walnut stock with full Bavarian cheek piece & beavertail forearm are hand checkered and oil finished. The great thing about true oil finishes is that small scratches and dents can easily be repaired without having to refinish the entire stock.

Bead front sight with 3 leaf rear express sight. Scope base included for scope mounting.

All Big Five Express rifles have a larger receiver, mono block and barrels for additional strength as required for large caliber ammunition.

Engraved Silver finished receiver with sculptured action release lever.

Current production barrels are brazed together with the rib and not soft soldered for strength and long life.

This rifle has double triggers with Extractor. All cases are always extracted when opening the rifle .

The safety is tang mounted and slides forward to fire.

New production from a famous Italian gun maker Sabatti.

Imported, distributed and serviced by IFG, Italian Firearm Group in Amarillo Texas.

Please note we have several of these rifles so we are using a stock picture with typical wood grain pattern of the same wood grade.

Note a 12mm scope base is included but the scope is not included.

Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
There are two versions of the 450/400 Nitro Express: 450-400 3 1/4", based on a blackpowder case; and 450-400-3" (400 Jeffery), designed for smokeless powder and introduced by W.J. Jeffery in 1902. Although performance is very similar they are not interchangeable, as the 450-400-3" has a thicker rim. The 450-400 3 1/4" is slightly more powerful, but the 450-400-3" is more common today and offers better load density with modern propellents. Collectively they were extremely popular a century ago, probably the most popular cartridge among tiger hunters and considered adequate for the world's largest game. On Craig Boddington's recommendation Hornady added the 450-400-3" to their dangerous game line; it has been popular in the Ruger Number One single shot and is currently chambered by most modern double rifle makers. With a 400-grain bullet at 2100 fps it develops much less recoil than big-bore cartridges, yet is perfect for buffalo and adequate for elephant. Kynoch loads both versions. — Craig Boddington
