Product Summary

The 1866 was already quite popular when the smaller, yet quite similar 1873 model was released. It became an immediate favorite. The Winchester Repeating Arms Company may have thought that domestic military sales would make up most of the orders for the firearm, but in fact, civilian sales and international military purchases were what brought in profit that year. In that day, the 1873 was the first lever action available with a broad variety of options. Today, an array of options is still offered in Taylor's 1873 line. The pistol grip model features a classic checkered pistol grip buttstock and checkered forend. Taylor's also offers two custom action options on all 1873 models. The Comanchero action package includes a custom short-stroke action, lightened hammer and trigger pull, butt cover, lever wrap, and gold bead front sight. The Taylor Tuned option includes a custom action with hand polishing, custom hammer and lever springs, custom magazine tube spring, and an overall lightened action. Our custom actions feature one of the smoothest hammer and trigger pulls on the market. Inventory status may not reflect exact SKUs, please contact us to ensure immediate availability. Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
The 44-40 Winchester (44 WCF) was introduced by Winchester in 1873 in their Model 1873 lever action. The '73, "the gun that won the West," was the first truly successful repeater, and its 44-40 cartridge was quickly adopted by other manufacturers, including both Colt and Smith & Wesson in revolvers. Using a .427-inch bullet, the standard load features a 200-grain bullet at about 1100 feet per second, producing 588 foot-pounds of energy. This is not a lot of power, but the 44-40 was probaby the most popular sporting cartridge of the 19th Century, accounting for untold amounts of game. It remained the most popular chambering in the 1892 Winchester, and was a common chambering in both rifles and handguns at least through the 1940s. The growth in Cowboy Action shooting has revived it; the 44-40 has less recoil than the 45 Colt, and serves as a common chambering for rifles and revolvers. Ammo is readily available and it is chambered to numerous reissues and reproductions. — Craig Boddington

Well made rifle and shoots great. I have shot both smokeless and blackpowder cartridges through it without any issues. Gun was zero'd well from the factory. I took off a star because the screws were extremely tight from the factory and the first time I took the action apart to thoroughly clean it one of them stripped. I had to drill it out and buy a replacement.
