Product Summary

Hornady Frontier 5.56 Nato 55Gr FMJ M193 1000/2

Frontier Cartridge features Hornady bullets in 223 Rem and 5.56 NATO. Applications range from plinking target shooting and hunting to law enforcement training and self-defense. - Cartridge: 5.56mm NATO - Bullet: 55 gr FMJ (M193) - Product Line: Frontier - Sectional Density: .157 - Ballistic Coefficient: .243 (G1) - Box Count: 1000

This 5.56x45 cartridge represents an exciting union between two of the heaviest hitters in the ammunition industry. Hornady, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of high quality bullets, has teamed up with Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, which has an impressive production capability with their 3,935 acre facility and nearly 80 years in operation, to create U.S. Military spec ammunition that is poised to give you some of the best performance that your money can buy.

This is an M193 round, and its 55 grain projectile contains a non-steel core that is good for target practice and plinking alike. The bullet’s jacket is drawn to the precise concentricity that has earned Hornady their reputation for accuracy, and its overall weight is strictly controlled for to ensure consistent performance. Hornady’s Frontier line of ammunition was originally loaded with Lake City’s brass when it was first introduced, and the Nebraskan manufacturer is pleased to be able to offer their bullet seated in so high quality a casing once more.

Caliber Dictionary

The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
The 5.56X45mm NATO cartridge was designed by James Sullivan, a member of Eugene Stoner's engineering team that developed both the M16 rifle and its original cartridge. The 5.56X45mm NATO was adopted by the U.S. military in 1964 and by NATO in 1980. With bullet diameter of .224-inch, the original M193 military cartridge used a 55-grain bullet at 3250 fps; the current M855A1 cartridge, developed by FN, uses a 62.5-grain bullet at 3020 fps, offering greater range and better penetration. The civilian version of the 5.56X45mm is 223 Remington; the cartridges are dimensionally identical but military chamber dimensions and specifications for military brass are different. It is considered safe to use 223 Remington ammo in a 5.56X45MM NATO chamber, but not a good idea to use 5.56X45mm ammo in a rifle specifically chambered for the 223 Remington. Although the stopping power of .22-caliber bullets remains controversial the 5.56X45mm has served well in now multiple generations of M16 rifles. — Craig Boddington
